During the Covid 19 pandemic, conspiracy myths are booming. It did not take long for the anti-Semitism of this narrative to become apparent. This is no coincidence and not extraordinary, though dangerous. Conspiracy myths and antisemitism are closely interwoven: antisemitism is a single conspiracy myth and every conspiracy myth is structurally based on the antisemitic world view. It is always a small, sinister group of people who are supposed to rule the world.

The historical prime example of such a narrative is „the Protocols of the Elders of Zion“, a fake that was intended to expose an alleged Jewish world conspiracy – and has been circulated ever since, despite being exposed as a fake. How essential the belief in the Jewish world conspiracy is for antisemitism can be seen not least in National Socialism. National Socialist texts delusionally conjured up the alleged danger emanating „from the Jew,“ so that the state’s antisemitic policy was rededicated to self-defense. This shows that conspiracy myths always include fantasies of annihilation.

The conspiracy myths that are currently circulating are not new, but rather updated. Instead of Rotschild it is now George Soros or Bill Gates, and instead of the poisoning of a well there is now a threat of compulsory vaccination. Much of the old can be discovered in the new.

Starting with the question of what a conspiracy myth is and what relationship there is to antisemitism, the lecture will take a historical look at „the Protocols of the Elders of Zion“ and the National Socialism, in order to finally analyse current conspiracy myths.
